Interview – Ben Kenney of Incubus

With Incubus set to tour the UK for the first time in 3 years, Amped had the oppurtunity for a quick chat with bass player Ben Kenney about the band’s return.

Amped: “Incubus has been around now for 20 years, not a lot of bands reach that stage, how does it feel to be at such a milestone?”

Ben Kenney: “It’s cool, y’know I understand that a lot of bands have can limited shelf life so we’re grateful. I’ve only been in the band 8 years but I feel like I’ve been here the whole time”

A: “A lot of bands have split up because of the pressures involved with touring and recording, how do you think you’ve managed to keep it together?”

BK: “It’s because we know we’ve got too much of a good thing going. I think it’s also because we’ve never been afraid to experiment”

A: “Incubus went on hiatus for a while before returning with ‘If Not Now, When?’, what there a reason for this”

BK: “We wanted to take a break not to burn out. I think the main concern for us was wanting to remain relevant”

A: “The new album deals with the theme or concept of love, it’s also notably mellower than your previous work. Was this a concious decision?”

BK: “It’s just what happened, we got together and it just came together. I can’t explain it, but it happened, it felt right”

A: “You’re returning to the UK for the first time since the hiatus, how does it feel to return to your British fanbase?”

BK: “”It’s great, we’ve always loved the UK, we just wish it was the summer instead!”
