‘Ladies Love A Super Hero’ from Rhondda Cynon Taff beat eight young bands from all over South Wales to win The Gathering’s Battle of the Bands final last Saturday 24 April.

Held in Bridgend Recreation Centre, the runners up were ‘Innovence’ and ‘The Decoy’ from Gwent. Judged by recognised names in the Welsh music industry, including Bridgend’s Jayce Lewis who has a massive following in Asia, the winners received £500 and two days recording time in the Manic Street Preacher’s Cardiff studios, each of the runners-up £250, and all three also won a fantastic array of media and music industry prizes.

In the final were : Offset (Bridgend County Borough), The Venue, Innovence, Evolution and Decoy (Gwent) Librarian’s Worst Nightmare (Merthyr Tydfil), Stars and Flights (Neath Port Talbot), and Ladies Love A Superhero (Rhondda Cynon Taff).

Supported by the South Wales Music Forum (comprising of eight local authorities) and Rockschool (Europe’s number one rock and pop music exam board, from grade exams to diplomas, where everyone can get a recognised qualification playing the music they love), The Gathering is an ideal opportunity to showcase young Welsh rock talent aged up to 18, and to catch them live before they make it big.

The night also featured headliners The Guns, rock/power pop Port Talbot based Kid Keep Dancing, All For The Fall – winners of The Gathering 2008, popular hip hop DJ Jason Camilleri as MC, spot prizes, competitions, outdoor mobile youth club, chill out areas, stalls and games.

Andre van Wyk, Arts Development Officer for Bridgend County Borough Council said: ”I want to say a massive thank you to all the lovely people that volunteered their time to come down and help on the day! Without the massive team of volunteers it simply would not happen. The bands were great and all the judges were in agreement that the level of talent was truly remarkable.”
