Amped is sad to report the passing of John Sicolo, the man behind legendary Newport venue TJs.

The venue opened in 1985 and its name stood for John Sicolo and Trilby Tucker (John’s partner).

It’s the subject of urban legend as it’s widely believe Kurt Cobain proposed to Courtney Love in the back room of the venue, other famous visitors include Rik Mayall and regular attendee Richey James Edwards.

Over the years TJs has hosted over 50,000 many big names including – Babes In Toyland,  Buzzcocks, Green Day, Hole, The Misfits, Oasis, Offspring, Primal Scream, Supergrass and UK Subs.

Not to mention being a starting point for local heros like Catatonia, Gorky’s Zycotic Mwnci, The Guns and Manic Street Preachers to name but a few.

R.I.P. John, and thankyou for doing what you did for the Welsh music scene.
